And, of course, thanks to all of you for selling the pecans! (Submitted by Pat Sweeney) Program for November 8th Meeting -Education CSP Current Realities of Public Education in North Carolina Our speaker for the November meeting is Rachelle E. Johnson, Executive Director North Carolina Association of Educators. Ms Johnson comes to us from Ohio where she was the Assistant Executive Director at the Ohio Education Association as well as Director of Legal Services. She is a licensed attorney and earned her J.D. at Case Western Reserve School of Law in Cleveland, Ohio. Ms Johnson is also a former English teacher with a BachelorÕs in English Education from Bowling Green State University, Bowling Green, Ohio. (Submitted by Maryanne Olsen) Arts Maryanne Olsen has organized a special outing for the CWC to the Cary Arts Center (101 Dry Ave.) to see A 1940Õs Radio Christmas Carol. The group rate is $17.00 per person. Tickets will be purchased after the November 8 meeting, so all checks are due to Maryanne that day. Once the tickets are purchased, there will be no refunds. Thank you, Maryanne, for organizing this fun trip. Conservation Gerald Adams, formerly of Campbell Rd. Nursery and now the Landscape Manager of the NCSU Centennial Campus, came to the Page-Walker pollinator garden on November 2 to give a special 1hour workshop on how to prepare your garden for winter. He used the Pollinator Garden plants as examples of how and which plants to prune back for winter, which plants to mulch to protect them from freezing, suggested types of mulch to use, and the best pruning and deadheading techniques. After the workshop, the group finished planting the pansies in the garden, as well as doing a bit more pruning. Eight people attended including 4 from the Cary WomanÕs Club. Gerald was a delightful presenter--and very knowledgeable. (Submitted by Lois Nixon) Education and Home Life On October 12, members and guests (24) volunteered at Note in the Pocket in Raleigh sorting and folding clothes. In addition, everyone donated undies and socks. Note in the Pocket uses incredibly organized procedures to clothe and add to the lives of children in need of both warmth and personal support. Then we boarded our comfortable limo-bus (thanks to a generous anonymous gift) and had a wonderful lunch at A Place at the Table. This start-up cafŽ offers meals with a Ņpay what you canÓ or volunteer for your meal. Often customers pay more than the price of their meals by purchasing a $10 token that can be used by those who canÕt afford lunch. Home Life donated $50.00, plus 24 of us each purchased a token. Director Maggi Kane spoke to us and stressed how choosing a meal and sharing conversation promotes building a community. This was a very rewarding day for the non-profits we supported, but maybe even more so for us! Many thanks to all who attended, and a special thank you to Jane Suppa, Nell Meese, Mary-Mel Kroeger, Maryanne Olsen, and Deborah Lynch for organizing this successful event. (Submitted by Jane Suppa) Education Your Help is Needed! This time of year seems to always bring a sense of thanksgiving for all we have been blessed with, as well as the desire to give to others less fortunate and in need. Kingswood Elementary School Feeding Friends Program is in need and would greatly appreciate the support of the Cary WomanÕs Club. Each week more than 30 bags of food and produce are distributed to families needing a little extra help. This number is expected to increase as the school year continues. Please pick up an item or two while grocery shopping and bring these items to the November 8th meeting; your donations will be collected and delivered to Kingswood Elementary by the Education CSP. Items in need include the following: Cans of meat (chicken, tuna) Cans of beans (pinto, black, navy, kidney, etc.) Boxes of dried pasta / rice Cans of pasta sauce (non-glass) Boxes of Mac n Cheese Cans of vegetables Oatmeal packets (instant) Cans of fruit Snacks: packages of individual servings (raisins, crackers & cheese, popcorn, granola bars, etc.) If you would like to volunteer at Kingswood you will need to register. You can visit Kingswood or any Wake County School during school hours. Bring identification with you. All volunteers will need to register and pass a criminal background check which can take 1 to 2 weeks. Website registration from home is not possible. Members can now support Kingswood Elementary when shopping at Publix and Harris Teeter! You may create an account at http://corporate.publix.com/community/corporate-campaigns/publix-partners. To link your VIC card at Harris Teeter, ask a representative to link your card to Kingswood #3148. Submitted by Maryanne Olsen, Co-Chair Mary-Mel Kroeger, Co-Chair Public Issues and Domestic Violence Elzbieta Hibbs was able to collect and deliver 25 new and/or gently used costumes for the InterAct Fall Festival, Trunk or Treat. Even Note in the Pocket gave several costumes they had, but couldnÕt use, to Elzbieta so she could deliver them to InterAct. On December 6, we will put together baskets for Moms and teens (who have outgrown toys). Kids will be able to ŅshopÓ for their Moms at InterActÕs Holiday Bazaar on December 15. We will be using our allotted funds, but it will not be enough. So please bring new (or nearly new) items to the November meeting, such as adult socks, bath and body products, scarfs, small kitchen items, journals, candles, picture frames, makeup and nail polish (esp. for the teens), jewelry, etc. that we will need to complete the baskets. Each basket will contain 4-5 items. You may also contact Elzbieta and she will gladly collect any items outside of the meeting, Please sign up to help! ItÕs also not too early to sign up for the February prison visit. See sign ups on the back table. (Submitted by Elzbieta Hibbs) Membership One of our main goals for this Club year is to increase membership and we have a new member this month! Be sure to welcome Beth Firrincieli. She has a special interest in the Education CSP, especially Note in the Pocket. Beth, we are glad to have you as part of our Club! Hospitality Diane needs help with the Holiday Luncheon at Prestonwood, especially in securing entertainment and decorating the room before the luncheon. See Diane for more information. In November, we will once again attend the Cary Page RotaryÕs spaghetti lunch/dinner after the meeting. Tickets will be on sale at the meeting or you can pay on site as well. The cost is $8.00, with children under 6 free. Times 11:30Š1:00 PM and 5:00Š7:00 PM. This yearÕs profits will go to Read and Feed, GigiÕs Playhouse (an achievement center for those with DownÕs Syndrome), and CarrollÕs Kitchen (a non-profit deli and bakery, that employs women who are reentering the workforce after homelessness or a prison sentence.) Bring your checks made out to CWC for the Holiday Luncheon on December 13 and give them to Carol French. The cost is $25.00. Changes in Board Positions We are sorry to announce that we have had two resignations from the board. Pat Sweeney is resigning her position as Ways and Means Chair and Judy Booger is stepping down from her position as Corresponding Secretary. They will both remain as members of the Club. Thank you, Pat and Judy, for all your work on behalf of the CWC. When a Board member resigns mid-term, the President appoints another member to complete the term. Mercedes Auger has agreed to complete PatÕs term as Ways and Means Chair. Please sign up for the Ways and Means committee so she can discuss Spring fundraisers. At this time, JudyÕs position is still open. The Corresponding Secretary conducts all necessary correspondence including notifying new members in writing of acceptance into the Club.
